Pipe Cleaner Shape Sculpture

Kindergarten

Final Artwork

Umbrella Objective:

The students will learn that they can make free-standing sculptures through transforming flat 2D shapes into 3D form using pipe cleaners, shapes of painted cardboard cutouts, and an elevated base with small holes.

Lesson Sequence:

Part 1 — Sculpture Base

The students will learn that a base provides a foundational structure for sculptures through elevating a square cardboard by attaching it to the side of a used masking tape roll and painting it with tempera using cardboard, masking tape roll, tempera paint, metal muffin tins, brushes, sponge, sponge plate, and water cup. The cardboard and the used masking tape roll was pre-attached with hot glue gun by the teachers before class.

Part 2 — Color Theory

The students will learn that mixing primary colors result in secondary colors through painting strips of cardboard with tempera using strips of cardboard, tempera paint, metal muffin tins, brushes, sponge, sponge plate, and water cup. After class, teachers cut the painted cardboards into shapes of circles, triangles, squares, and rectangles.

Part 3 — Shapes Into Sculpture

The students will learn that they can make free-standing sculptures through transforming flat 2D shapes into 3D form using pipe cleaners, shapes of painted cardboard cutouts, and an elevated base with small holes.
